Mary Catherine's science class did an experiment on what would happen if they put conversation candy hearts into bottles of different solutions. The solutions were, water, soda, vinegar, and rubbing alcohol. After they figured out what solutions they were going to use, they had to make predictions about what they think would happen. For the water, they thought that the hearts would sink or turn gray. For vinegar, they thought the hearts would melt, sink, or turn different colors. For the soda, they thought the hearts would turn brown, melt, or overflow. For the rubbing alcohol, they thought the hearts would overflow and pop the lid off, change shapes and turn brown, explode, stay the same, smell funny, or melt and change colors. After making predictions, they filled 4 bottles with the solutions and left one empty for the "control" bottle. Then, they put 7-8 conversation hearts into each bottle. They saw that in the vinegar, the hearts formed tiny bubbles. After an hour in the water, the hearts started to float. There was extra sediment floating around in the rubbing alcohol from the hearts. In the soda, the hearts melted. And in the air, they didn't do anything. I found this experiment @: http://fun-a-day.com/candy-heart-experiments-valentines-day/
