Water Crisis in Honduras

Introduction:

Honduras is located in Central America, between Nicaragua and Guatemala. It is a very small country compared with America. Over 1 million of these people lack safe drinking water which causes many deaths. Mostly in children. The capital is Tegucigalpa. Over 50% of the people live in small villages or towns.



Climate:


The climate is subtropical in lowlands and temperate in mountains.The terrain is mostly mountains in interior, narrow coastal plains. The lowest point in elevation is the caribbean sea 0 m. The highest point cerro las minas 2,820 m. Some natural resources include timber, gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, iron, ore, antimony, coal, fish, and hydropower.



Land and water usage:


The total land area in Honduras is 112,090 sq km. The total land mass is 111,890 sq km. The total water area is 200 sq km. The total irrigated land (Farm Land) in Honduras is 878.5 sq km. Total renewable water resource percentage is 95.9m3 cu km. The total freshwater withdrawal in Honduras is 2.12 cu km/yr.



Population And Conditions:


Honduras has an estimated population of 8 million.The total population in poverty would be over 60% of its population. The unimproved water source estimate in rurals is 19.3%. The total sanitation facility access in rurals is an estimated 25.6%. Some of the waterborne illnesses and diseases include diarrhea, extreme stomach pains, and headaches.

Water Crisis:

In 1998 Honduras was hit by Hurricane Mitch. It was the Hardest country hit by the hurricane. The hurricane was followed by 3 days of rain which caused extreme landslides and flooding. The Hurricane caused over 58 million dollars in damage and left 75% of the country without safe drinking water. Even now families are forced to drink unsafe water. Now based on the information i have concluded I can infer that Honduras Has an Economic water scarcity. Right now not much is being done.
