My science discovery this week is on the puffer fish. Did you know that a puffer fish is on of the most poisonous animals on earth? Also a puffer fish expands its body so that it is harder for predators to eat it! Some species of puffer fish can even live in fresh water! That means that a puffer fish could be living in the Alleghany River. Puffer fish contain a poison that is called "Tetrodoctoxin". It is 1200 times more potent than cyanide. A nickname for the puffer fish are "spiky porcupine fish". I chose to do my science discovery this week on the puffer fish because I think they are a very unique type of animal.

My science discovery this week is on penguins. Did you know that some species of penguins can swim up to 22 mph? Also the first species of penguins lived about 60 million years ago! All but two species of penguins breed in large colonies of up to 1000 birds. Some penguins create nests for their young with pebbles and loose feathers. Both mother and father penguins spend many months with their baby penguin until the baby is strong enough to hunt and find food on its own. thank you for reading my science discovery this week!
Giant pandas may climb as high as 4,000 meters just to feed on different slopes of leafs in the summer seasons! Today, there are not many giant pandas left on earth. There are only about 1,000 left. Did you know that giant pandas have a great sense of smell? The males use this attribute to avoid other male giant pandas to find females to mate with during mating season. Giant pandas do have predators that include, Brown bears, leopards, and wild dogs. Giant pandas mainly eat bamboo. Giant pandas can crush up four centimeter stems of bamboo with their powerful jaw. Giant pandas do not hibernate, but they will find shelter in cold weather.
