North American Turkey 11/3/24

This week I will be doing my science discovery on the North American Turkey. The turkeys scientific name is Melegigris gallopavo. The turkey is the heaviest member of the diverse Galliforms family. The turkey can weigh up to 50 lbs., but it usually only gets up to 20-35 lbs. It prefers the foresty environment. It eats thing such as berries and small insects.

Bears In The USA 11/13/14

Some bears in the U.S. are the Cinnamon Bear, Black Bear, Brown Bear, Grizzly Bear, Polar Bear, and the Kodiak Bear. I will be doing my main amount of research on the Polar Bear. The Polar Bear

The polar bear (Ursus martimus) is a carnivorous bear whose native range lies largely within the Arctic Circle, encompassing the Arctic Ocean, its surrounding seas and surrounding land masses. It is a large bear, approximately the same size as the omnivorous Kodiak Bear(Ursus arctos middendorffi).A boar (adult male) weighs around 350–700 kg (770–1,540 lb), while a sow (adult female) is about half that size. Although it is the sister species of the Brown Bear it has evolved to occupy a narrower ecological niche, with many body characteristics adapted for cold temperatures, for moving across snow, ice, and open water, and for hunting the seals which make up most of its diet.Although most polar bears are born on land, they spend most of their time at sea. Their scientific name means "maritime bear", and derives from this fact. Polar bears hunt their preferred food of seals from the edge of sea ice, often living off fat reserves when no sea ice is present.

Rare Reptiles in the U.S.A

Some rare reptiles in the U.S. consists of the Spotted Turtle also known as Clemmys Guttata. Also the Green Sea Turtle the scientific name for this turtle is Chelonia Mydas. One more rare reptile is the Loggerhead Sea Turtle, also known as Caretta Caretta. There are many more rare reptiles in the U.S.A, but there is one in particular that I want to focus on it's the Green Sea Turtle because I have never heard of it. The Green Sea Turtle ranges throughout tropic and sub-tropical regions throughout the world that's why they are so rare through out the U.S.. These turtles are usually Herbivores. The adults usually live in shallow lagoons, feeding on many different types of seaweed. The turtles that live throughout adulthood and reach maturity may live up to eight years in the wild. Fully grown turtles can grow up to five feet in length and weigh up to 400 pounds! The largest known Green Sea Turtle to ever be found was 814 pounds tipping the charts at over 390 kilograms!
