For this week I did my science discovery on freshwater angelfish. The scientific name of angelfish is Pterophyllum scalare. Some angelfish are freshwater fish, which means they don't live in saltwater or oceans. Their origin is the Amazon region of South America. Baby angelfish are called fry. Angelfish can get up to six inches in length. Angelfish eat live foods such as Adult Brine Shrimp, Black Worms, and Mosquito larvae, for example. Angelfish also come in many different varieties. Silver is the natural coloring for an angelfish, but thanks to aquarists, we now have other varieties of angelfish. There's Silver, Zebra, Black, Black Lace, Half Black, Veilteil, Marble, Golden, Blushing, and Pearle Scale. So as you can see, I did my science discovery this week on freshwater angelfish.
For my science discovery this week I did spider plants. The scientific name for spider plants is Chlorophytum comosum. It is a flowering perennial herb. They're called spider plants because of the many long leaves that grow out from the base. Some spider plants are striped with yellow while others have just plain green leaves. Spider plants originated from southern and tropical Africa, but are now native in many other parts of the world. Now almost anyone can get spider plants to keep in pots inside their homes ( spider plants purify the air).
For my science discovery this week I did the Sassafras tree. It's scientific name is Sassafras albidum. It is in the Laurel Family (Lauraceae). Sassafras is a deciduous tree and usually grows 20 feet tall and rarely 50 feet tall. Sassafras is native to Eastern North America and Eastern Asia. Sassafras root and root bark is also used in sassafras tea and the root was used in root beer.
For my science discovery this week I did elephant grass. It's scientific name is pennistum purpureum. It got the names "elephant grass" and "napier grass" because it grows in dense clumps and averages 10 feet tall and you can't see an elephant if it goes into this grass. It originated from the savannahs in Africa and grows well in tropical conditions. It is also invasive to Florida and was introduced to the state in the year of 1915.
