My Science Discovery is on Tiger Lilies. Tiger Lilies, known be their scientific name Lilium Lancifolium or Lilium Tigrinum. They grow up to four feet tall. They produce hairy stems covered with green, lance-shaped leaves. They bloom in midsummer with petals that curl backwords. The flowers are bright orange with black spots. The flowers can grow up to three inches in width. The Tiger Lily is also known as the Ditch Lily as it is found in and around ditches in large parts of America.
My science discovery this week is on Palm trees. Palm trees are a botanical family of perennial lianas, shrubs, and trees. They are in the arecaceae family. They grow in hot climates. Well known Palm trees are the Date palm tree and the Coconut palm tree. There are about 2,600 species of Palm trees. Most of them living in tropical, subtropical, and warm temperate climates. Palms are among the best known and most extensively cultivated plant families. They have been important to humans throughout much of history. Many common products and foods are derived from palms, and palms are also widely used in landscaping for their exotic appearance, making them one of the most economically important plants.
A pumpkin is a cultivar of the squash plant most commonly of Cuburbita pepo, that is round, with smooth, slightly ribbed skin and deep yellow to orange color. Inside the shell there are seeds and pulp. Some exceptionally large cultivars of squash with similar appearance have also been derived from cucurbita maxima. Specific cultivars of winter squash derived from other species, including C.argyrosperma, and C. moschata, are also sometimes called "pumpkin". Pumpkins, like other squash, are native to North America. Pumpkins are widely grown for commercial use, and are used both in food and recreation. Pumpkin Pie, for instance, is a traditional part of Thanksgiving meals in the United States, although commercially canned pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie fillings are usually made from different kinds of winter squash than the pumpkins frequently carved as jack o' lanterns for decoration around Halloween.
My science discovery this week is on Cherry Blossom. Cherry Blossoms are the flowers of several trees. Particularly the Japanese Cherry. Cherry blossoms are native to the Himalayas. It is currently widely distributed, especially in the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere. A few of these places are South Korea, West Siberia, China, Japan, and the U.S. These flowers do not produce fruit, they are mainly for ornamental use.
