I chose to do my Science Discovery on elk. Some facts about elk are. Elk are also called wapiti, a Native American word that mean(light- colored-deer) Elk are related to deer but are much larger than most of their relatives. A bull (male) elk's antlers may reach 4 feet (1.2 meters) above it's head, so that the animal towers 9 feet (2.7 meters ) tall. Bull elk lose their antlers each March, but they begin to grow them back in May in preparation for the lat-summer breeding season. In early summer, elk migrate to high mountain gazing grounds where the cows (females) will give birth. Each cow typically has a single calf, which can stand by the time it's 20 minutes old. I chose to do my Science Project on elk because elk are found in many places in PA Pennsylvania. Their are places that I visited while i was on Vacation that had places where you could see the elk but they must have been busy because I did not see any elk except for in pictures. I did my science discovery on raccoon's. Raccoon's eat fruit and plants—including those grown in human gardens and farms. They will even open garbage cans to dine on the contents. These ring-tailed animals are equally opportunistic when it comes to choosing a dinning site. They may inhabit a tree hole, fallen log, or a house's attic. Females have one to seven cubs in early summer. The young raccoon's often spend the first two months or so of their lives high in a tree hole. Later, mother and children move to the ground when the cubs begin to explore on their own. In the natural world, raccoon's snare a lot of their meals in the water. These nocturnal foragers use lightning-quick paws to grab crayfish, frogs, and other aquatic creatures. On land, they pluck mice and insects from their hiding places and raid nests for tasty eggs. Raccoon's are mammals, they are omnivores their average life span is two to three years, their weight is usually four to twenty-three lbs. My science Discovery is on Dream Catchers. The history behind Dream Catchers is that Native Americans believed that dream catchers ward off bad dreams. The positive dreams would slip through the hole in the center of the dream catcher, and glide down the feathers to the sleeping person below. The negative dreams would get caught up in the web, and expire when the first rays of the sun struck them. That is why you are suppose to put the dream catcher over your head when you go to sleep. My Science Discovery is on lionhead rabbits. Their are two different versions of this breed European and United States. The European breed is a crossbreed between a swiss fox and a Belgian Dwarf and a small woolly breed. They have also added a lop eared Lionhead along with the erect eared. The United States breed was imported from Europe, and then it was crossbred with smaller breeds to improve the breed. In 2005 the lionhead was finally recognized by the ARBA , but only in the tortise color. I got all my information from
